NSW: Freckles, moles, red hair risk factors for melanoma
SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - Red hair, freckles, moles and blue eyes are greater risk factorsfor the development of teenage melanomas than exposure to sun, a new study has found.
The Queensland Cancer Fund study compared more than 200 cases of teenagers who haddeveloped a melanoma between the ages of 15 and 19, Australian Doctor reports in its April12 issue.
The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, found having more than100 moles of two mm in diameter increased a child's risk of developing melanoma by adolescencemore than 20 times.
Other predictors of melanoma included a propensity to freckle, inability to tan, redhair, blue eyes and family history.
Commenting in the journal, Professor John Kelly of the Victorian Melanoma Service saidmelanoma was uncommon in adolescents.
However, he said teenagers with a larger than usual number of moles should be examinedby a dermatologist.
