Amoco earnings off 30 pct. in quarter

Chicago-based Amoco Corp. said its first-quarter earnings fell30 percent to $331 million, or $1.28 a share, because of depressedoil prices. Revenue for the nation's fifth-largest oil companydeclined 16 percent to $5.9 billion. Amoco Chairman Richard Morrowsaid the decline was due to substantially lower earnings fromworldwide exploration and production operations, although it waspartially offset by higher profits from Amoco's chemical operations.Amoco's earnings per share declined proportionately less than itsprofit because a stock buy-back program reduced the number of sharesoutstanding.
