WA: Labor and Liberals vying for best education policy
The major parties are vying for the education vote in the West Australian election
campaign .. promising large spending commitments on school buildings and upgrades.
Premier ALAN CARPENTER says Labor's spending 1.5 billion dollars on public schools
in the next four years .. of which 300 million is new money.
Fifteen of the schools on the government's list of 36 will open next year and another
21 have been planned for over the next four years.
Opposition leader COLIN BARNETT has promised a 500 million dollar upgrade of schools
.. over and above money allocated in the state budget .. to build 14 new schools over
six years.
Unlike Labor .. the Liberals support private-public partnership building projects ..
where the commercial sector builds the schools and leases them back to the government.
Mr CARPENTER says the Liberals haven't properly costed their program.
